The Spinning Trinity

This week . . .

The unveiling of the Trinity on both late-night TV and the grounds of a state Capitol building.

Colbert, fidget-spinners, and the Trinity

Millions of viewers of the Late Show received a full teaching about the Trinity this past week as host Stephen Colbert discussed the recent sensation of fidget-spinners and how certain religious leaders are using them as object lessons to teach about God’s Triune nature. With ample amounts of humor, Colbert was very positive about the object lesson and compared it to a modern day version of the three-leaf clover, which St. Patrick used to teach the same concept hundreds of years ago.

For those with eyes to see, the concept of the Trinity is being reintroduced to the planet in a fresh way in recent decades. Trinitarian theology is taking more and more of a prominent place in the church and books like The Shack are making their way into mainstream thought and media. God’s nature as a Divine Family is key to reaching this generation, and is obviously central to the entire Gospel story…

It is ironic, however, that at the end of the Late Show the traditional, singular, white-bearded God in the sky was showcased in a final interaction with Colbert… So we pray that the true revelation of the Trinity dismantles this archaic image of God and that we shift more and more into the truth of God — that He is a dance (a spin) of love and unity between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

A broken religious monument in Arkansas

A man in Arkansas has been arrested after driving his vehicle into the newly unveiled monument of the Ten Commandments at the state Capitol. The monument had been several years in the making after there were many legal battles to determine if it was a violation of the separation between church and state (the arrested individual obviously didn’t agree with the outcome).

The irony of this story is that when the original Ten Commandments were unveiled, they too were smashed to pieces within the first week of their creation. Moses himself did this when seeing the Israelite camp worshipping the golden calf.

We are in significant times as a nation and we believe this is yet another “sign” of the transition from law to grace that is occurring. Let me explain…

In the biblical story, the smashing of the commandments was a prophetic picture of Christ’s body being broken on our behalf. Jesus took the penalty of the Law (summarized in the Ten Commandments) upon Himself and His body was broken for our transgression of those laws. But of course, He was raised in a new glorified body having fulfilled the law for us, just like Moses’s statue was mercifully recreated soon after it was broken. It is also important to note that when Moses received the second set of tablets, the Lord gave Him a stronger revelation of His goodness and compassion. This happened while Moses was in the “cleft of a rock,” which is a stark image of Christ and His finished work… In the same way, the resurrected body of Christ brought about a fresh and fuller revelation of the image and glory of God!

Here’s where this connects with America… There is a breakdown of the law (legalism) happening in our country at this time, but it will result in a deeper unveiling of the grace-filled God — the Triune God who is a Divine Family of Love.

. . . And on that note, with even more irony, when the Ten Commandment monument was hit by the vehicle, it specifically broke into three big pieces
