Last month, the richest man in the world (as of February 2022) joined a Christian podcast to discuss media, politics, and Jesus. The satirical group Babylon Bee was contacted by the Tesla/SpaceX CEO to see if he could come on their show. Since then, the interview has received a lot of criticism for a wide array of reasons. Some of those reasons are political, with many people taking issue with the Babylon Bee’s obvious stance on particular issues; however, some religious folk took offense at how casually the podcast hosts talked to Elon Musk about receiving Jesus into his life…
So, while people argue over Elon’s genuineness (or the hosts’ understanding of salvation), we wanted to just break into the conversation and point out something incredible here. During this controversial moment when Elon was asked if he would accept Jesus, part of his response was the following: “If Jesus is saving people, I don’t want to get in His way.”
This is a tremendous statement being made publicly, before all the world, by one of the richest people in the history of our planet. While some will say God is not a respecter of persons and that the poor man’s confession is just as important as Mr. Musk’s, let’s be careful not to miss out on something special God is doing in the world right now. In our day, we are seeing more and more the biblical promise of “kings” honoring the name of God’s Son. Yes, “kings” speaks to political leaders, but as new empires of technology and information emerge, the term can equally apply to the modern CEO just as much as presidents and senators. Elon is a modern “king” giving honor to the name of Jesus in a similar way that the pagan King of Persia, Cyrus, did. History shows us that Cyrus was quite an ungodly individual; yet the Scriptures honor him as one who played an instrumental role in God’s purposes on earth. Cyrus, in particular, did not stand in the way of God as he allowed the rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem.
There is a new temple rising in this day and age; one made of living stones awakened to their redeemed identity in Jesus Christ. This podcast interview is a simple testimony of the name of our Redeemer being lifted up. He is lifted up in quiet and subtle ways all the time, ways that will never get the kind of exposure as an Elon Musk interview. But let’s celebrate both types of recognition, especially as we realize that Jesus is on the move, releasing salvation and truth in all sectors of society.
